Our economy has survived one of the most crippling events of our lifetimes. Greed took over common sense and left all of us holding our breaths and holding on to our wallets.
We did not go over the cliff but came terribly close. Job loss, home foreclosures, bankruptcies, health care crises … the list of financial tragedies is long.
In South Carolina alone, we lost 250, 000 jobs. District 3 faces 12 % unemployment, and there are no new jobs in sight.
In the face of this life-changing economic downturn, where are our South Carolina leaders?
Our Governor fought against federal stimulus funds until ordered to take them by the S.C. Supreme Court. Many of our local legislators supported the Governor in his attempts to withhold funds and gut our state government. This fall, the legislature “goofed” by not understanding the federal government’s free offer to extend unemployment benefits. The cost? More pain for our longest unemployed citizens. More cost for taxpayers by the need to hold a special legislative session to fix this error.
It is time for new leadership. Only new, determined leadership can set a path for good jobs, reformed health care, and responsible government.
District 3 needs a common sense voice in the debate and a leader sitting at the national table. I believe I can be that voice and that leader.
Together, we will do what we always do, work to ensure that we return to a strong economy, to nurture strong families, to re-build a strong America.
That is why I want to be your Congresswoman.
