An honor student at Easley High School, Jane also played on the school’s basketball team. From there, she attended Clemson University, receiving a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1981. While at Clemson, she was the first female Commander of Air Force ROTC.
Growing up in the Ballard family meant that you would do well in school and that you could do anything. Every child in my family was expected to take physics and calculus. We did, and we loved it.
When I went to Clemson, I was fascinated with Engineering. Its emphasis on problem-solving gives you a way of thinking you can use in any field. Analyze the situation, choose the best option, and refine the solution as necessary. This technique is the same as in aviation. It is how I deal with life. It is how I will serve our district in Washington.
